Get involved with Black Humboldt!

Black Humboldt is a volunteer run organization centering the work of Black & Brown community members and the various intersections of their lived experience. We operate with an open door policy to invite anyone from our community to platform their voices, needs and ideas and encourage folx to get involved in whatever ways they can. Ww offfer monetary support to coordinators, volunteers and community members that offer internal structuring whenever possible. We do not limit community access to structuring and building based on past or “work” experiences and restructuring our internal web to not place any organizer “in charge of” or “higher up” than any other one. Through this program BH is actively dismantling systemic issues that negatively affect BIPOC communities on a societal level and are actively tackling a common issue in racial/equity work; whereas the people doing the organizing and community based work are commonly not from the community the organization aims to serve.

Approaches we've taken to center, uplift and involve historically under-served communities includes platforming, hiring and collaborating with BIPOC artists and culture bearers regardless of their background, education or other deciding factors sometimes used in hiring processes. By removing these barriers this project directly serves individuals that identify as Black, Brown, Afro or BIPOC and historically have experienced barriers when accessing jobs, education, art spaces, opportunities, resources and more. Black Humboldt serves any marginalized intersection that the before mentioned identities represent, which also include LGBTQA+, Elderly, Youth, Poor, working class, disabled, recently incarcerated, uneducated and more. This project positively impacts many marginalized communities. In attempts to heighten health and vitality within the BIPOC community, which is too often overlooked and is highly underrepresented in comparison to their white counterparts, this work will help to remove the barriers these communities encounter attempting to create a space for themselves within Humboldt County. This work creates resources, tools and engages the BIPOC community directly. It strengthens BIPOC self identity, community involvement and creates a higher sense of self.
