Black Humboldt’s
Cultural Innovator Program
The Cultural Innovators Program is Black Humboldt’s leadership and creative development initiative designed to uplift Black and Brown community members as visionaries, organizers, artists, and change makers on California’s rural Northern Coast. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, collaborative projects, and community-rooted skill building, the program supports participants in growing their leadership, deepening their cultural practice, and turning bold ideas into meaningful action. Grounded in Black Humboldt’s values of empowerment, collective care, and liberation, the program helps cultivate local leaders who are prepared to strengthen community, build new opportunities, and carry forward innovative work that reflects the brilliance, resilience, and future of our people.
Leadership and fellowship opportunity designed to support the growth of Black, Brown, and Afro-Indigenous leadership on California’s rural Northern Coast, while advancing the organization’s mission to empower, enlighten, and entertain the Black and Brown community.
Each cohort spends 24 months developing the participants’ projects and taking part in personal and professional development opportunities, attending retreats, and contributing to projects that strengthen community power, representation, and opportunity in Humboldt County.
Fellows may focus their work in areas such as administrative support, communications, collective building, arts and culture, or resource and education development. The program is rooted in mentorship, Afrocentric and cooperative leadership practices, and collective efforts to challenge oppressive systems while building more caring, interconnected, and community-led futures.
Participants will be expected to engage consistently with Black Humboldt’s work through meetings, outreach, project development, and monthly service commitments. Black Humboldt encourages applications from people who identify as Black, Brown, Afro-Indigenous, African American, African, Afro-Latiné, Afro-Caribbean, or part of the African Diaspora, especially those committed to social justice, decolonization, and creating opportunities for historically excluded communities. Experience in organizing or collective community work is welcome, but not required.
