What is Black Humboldt ?

Black Humboldt, BH, is a community-based, grassroots organization offering cultural, arts and educational programming to the Black and Brown communities of The Redwood Region of California. Black Humboldt is a nonprofit organization structured to reflect its core values of collaboration and community empowerment. Operating under a cooperative model, decision-making processes and internal structuring intentionally challenge traditional hierarchical models, prioritizing collective leadership, inclusivity, and community-driven input.

BH is interested in networking, building relationships and community with local residents. Through creating opportunities of success for the communities we serve, Black Humboldt is drastically decreasing the vulnerability of our community while sustaining longterm tools to foster wellness.

Black Humboldt operates on the present and ancestral Homeland and unceded territory of the Wiyot Tribe. Please donate to the Wiyot Tribe honor tax. We encourage direct giving to Tribes and Native-led efforts. Tribes and Nations in Humboldt County include Hupa, Karuk, Mattole, Tolowa, Wailaki, Wiyot, Yurok. We make this land acknowledgment in recognition that our words must be matched by action and approach. Please learn from Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy's lecture "What Good Is a Land Acknowledgment?" Honor Tax link: http://www.honortax.org/

We recognize and acknowledge the labor upon which our country, state, and institutions are built. Remember that our country is built on the labor of enslaved people who were kidnapped and brought to the US from the African Continent and recognize the continued contribution of their survivors. We acknowledge all immigrant labor, including voluntary, involuntary, and trafficked peoples who continue to serve within our labor force

Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC): Historically excluded and divested people as a direct result of American Colonialism.

Black & Brown: People descending from within the African Diaspora.

Black Humboldt’s Theory of Change : Black Humboldt believes that empowering Black and Brown individuals through culturally relevant spaces, leadership development, and community-driven solutions will challenge systemic inequities and create lasting change.

We center the voices and experiences of our community. By dismantling oppression, shifting power structures, and amplifying representation, we work to create a future where Black and Brown communities thrive.
